Merillat Industries was founded in Adrian, Michigan as an American manufacturer of kitchen cabinets in 1946 by Orville D. Merillat. Now retired, Richard Merillat, took over from his father as CEO and President. The Merillat Industries corporate headquarters, still located in Adrian, are on US-223 just outside the Adrian city limits. They had 11 manufacturing plants and over 4,200 employees in 2004 and have operated as an independent unit of Masco Corporation, a Detroit building products conglomerate since 1985. In 2004 Merillat and Duncanville, Texas based QualityCabinets joined to form the Masco Builder Cabinet Group. In late 2007 Merillat Industries dissolved and began going by this new moniker. On September 22, 2008, Masco announced that it plans to close the Adrian plant in early 2009, stating the following as its reason of closure: “Given the unprecedented decline in new construction, however, more action is necessary. Obviously this was a very difficult decision with a high level of emotion as Adrian is the original founding plant for the Merillat brand. This closure is no reflection on the caliber of work nor the quality of the workforce. Rather, it is solely driven by deteriorating market conditions.” Approximately 300 people will be without jobs when the plant closes. Masco Cabinetry headquarters, Ann Arbor Township, Michigan In February 2010, the company announced a merger of the Adrian, Michigan-based Masco Builder Cabinet Group, and the Middlefield, Ohio-based Masco Retail Cabinet Group. The Retail Cabinet Group was most noted for producing the Kraftmaid, and Mills Pride cabinet brands. The new company that was formed has come to be known as Masco Cabinetry. This new company is headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan at 4600 Arrowhead Drive. The company legally adopted its new name on January 1, 2011. April 23, 2015 Connie Munkres Overall rating 1.2Finish 2.0Durability 1.0Warranty 1.0Custom Options 1.0Price / Value 1.0Quality 1.0 Stay Away from Merillat! In 2014 we purchased a home built in 2007 with Merillat cabinets. What a mess the cabinets are in. The sides of the island and end cabinets are covered in some kind of wallpaper-like substance. NOT WOOD. The island drawer scraped when opening and closing until it finally just stuck and wouldn’t open at all! My husband fixed it temporarily with a shim. The cherry finish looks okay from a distance, but up close it is visible that the color/finish has faded! Obviously, there is a very thin coat of stain. These cabinets are a nightmare and should all be replaced. I would NEVER buy another house with Merillat cabinets. Comments Was this review helpful to you? 14 3

June 21, 2014 Kevin Becker Overall rating 3.7Finish 3.0Durability 3.0Warranty 4.0Custom Options 6.0Price / Value 3.0Quality 3.0 13 year review I purchased our Merillat cabinets in 2001. They looked good for the first 2 years. After year 3 the finish was pealing near the floor of one of the cabinets. I called Merillat and they sent a “repair” kit consisting of a paint stick an a tiny vial of paint. The problem is the paint is pealing. By year 7 the hinges on 3 of the cabinets need to be replaced. I found replacement hinges but not from Merillat. At year 12 all of the cabinets are showing wear around the handles and knobs. The finish of some of the knobs has worn off. Lastly at year 15 (today), the front of one of pull out draws fell off. The cabinet front is mounted to the drawer by a particle board plate. This plate tore from the frame just by opening the drawer. My advise is do not buy these cabinets if you expect long life from a cabinet. Comments Was this review helpful to you? 21 2

July 23, 2014 Guest Overall rating 2.3Finish 5.0Durability 1.0Warranty 1.0Custom Options 5.0Price / Value 1.0Quality 1.0 Merillat Basics are junk! We chose Merillat Basics, Homestead Birch for our new home and upgraded the drawers to dovetail and easy close. The fronts on these cabinets look good and are sturdy. That’s where the good ends. The finish was so thin that it rubbed off in many places during installation. The sides of these cabinets are 3/8″ pressboard with a photographic finish applied. The corners have flimsy supports that break away easily since they are just hot glued in place. The flimsy sides have a dado cut in them to receive the 1/4″ back. As you can imagine, these break out easily too. We would not have ordered these if we had seen the construction before hand. The cabinets in the showroom all have countertops on them so the construction is mostly hidden. When buying a home over 1/4 of a million dollars (not counting the land), you expect a certain level of quality. These cabinets are not it. I’ve gotten better from China!
