The inspiration behind my decision to distress my kitchen cabinets came from this article. I fell in love with that French inspired kitchen and decided I needed a little of that in my life s’il vous plait! We inherited black granite counter tops and painted white cabinets from the previous owners, so we weren’t too far off of the inspiration kitchen. All I needed to do was distress the cabinets to achieve the look. It wasn’t a difficult task but it was time consuming. Here’s a recap of the process. 1. Remove all of the cabinet hardware. 2. Sand the cabinets with a sanding block. Yeah, you break your ankle around here and I put you to work

Hi, I have a question. Great article, BTW! I bought my home 15 months a go. Our kitchen cabinets were regular wood tone with some sort of shiny varnish on them. Not sure what type of wood.. maybe pine or white oak? Anyway, my favorite style of decorating is shabby chic, French farmhouse and beach cottage.. so I wasn't happy with the wood cabinets. My husband and I spent a week painting them white. We just used a plain stark white semi-gloss paint. I prefer matte paint for furniture, but figured that semi-gloss latex paint would be easier to clean grease and dirty finger prints off of. We didn't sand the varnish off of the cabinets before painting.. we just painted. It's been about a year and they've held up fine. We didn't add a topcoat of anything over the paint, either. Just two coats of white paint. I want to use antiquing glaze on them. Can I? Will that work on my cabinets? Will it go through the paint and the previous varnish beneath the paint and into the wood? I've never heard of it before so not sure how it works. I also want to sand my cabinets to distress them lightly in the raised areas. Just to make it more chippy. Would I do that before or after the antique glaze? Any suggestions would be helpful! My email is Megan.Photographs@yahoo.com. Thank you so much!

Finish off your project. Depending on whether or not you removed your cabinet doors, the way you finish will differ slightly. If you took off the doors, put them back in place with their hinges and and knobs reattached. Remove any painters tape, and clean up the surrounding area. Voila! With the cleanup finished, your project is completed; go an enjoy your new antiqued cabinets!

Mirrored cabinet doors represent a relatively minimal design risk, since swapping in more conventional glass at a later date is always possible. If you’ve always coveted the understated glamour of antiqued mirrors and mirrored furniture, you’d be a great candidate for spiffing up your cabinets in such a graceful, unusual way.

Giving your cabinets a makeover is a sure fire way to renew and refresh the look of your kitchen. The Home Depot associates who answer questions on our online How-To Community Forums have recommended the Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations Kit as a surprisingly easy and cost-effective way to make your cabinets look new again. We’ve even seen some before and after photos a reader posted on the Forums showing off her spectacular kitchen re-do using the Cabinet Transformations Kit. Recently, a regular contributor to the Forums described how he departs from the official instructions on the box to create his own antique cabinet finish. “The door was treated with standard Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformation technique. However, after the glaze was nicely laid out and dried, I then took a dampened 3M scrubby pad and purposely rubbed away some of the glaze to give a worn look. Indeed, some of the base coat was deliberately worn away back to the original finish, again giving a worn look.” Pretty clever, eh? It’s probably a lot of fun, too, deliberately messing up the final glaze. Above, you see a before-and-after display we put together of how this technique looks when it’s done. Here’s a video from The Home Depot’s YouTube channel that explains a little more how the Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations Kit works. The video was originally intended for Home Depot associates, to get them up to speed on the product, but you’ll get some good information from it even if you’re not a Home Depot associate. If you have questions about this method of creating an antique finish on your kitchen cabinets, our Forums associates will be pleased to help. The same goes for any questions you might have about paint or stain … or any home improvement project or product you’re interested in.
